[Verse 1]
GmDm
The boy sits in a field tall grass above his head,
FmCm
and he's thinking of the path that his ancestors did tread
EbmBb
and as he's dreaming of the future a mist does descend,
AD
and he wonders if this is the beginning or is this the end
GmDm
And out of the mist a tall creature does appear,
FmCm
his eyes wide and friendly, his face full of years,
EbmBb
he says "we're going on a journey in my hot air balloon,
AD
and the time is now so we must get going soon".
[Verse 2]
GmDm
They flew over the houses and the streets they use to know,
FmCm
over trains going fast and people going slow,
EbmBb
there was snow on the mountains and boats on the sea,
AD
and there were lovers in the forest carving their names into a tree
GmDm
The boys says "where are we going, where are we going to,
FmCm
I'm scared of the future and I'm mildly scared of you,
EbmBb
the creature looked down and said "don't be scared of the unknown",
AD
we're going to a place in which I have grown.
[Verse 3]
GmDm
With a sudden gush of wind the balloon fell from the sky,
FmCm
and the boy shut his eyes and hoped he wouldn't die,
EbmBb
the creature was calm, he had done this before
AD
so he landed the hot air balloon and he opened the door
[Verse 4]
GmDm
The boy walked out and he couldn't believe his eyes,
FmCm
there was a flock of sheep floating through the skies
EbmBb
followed by a shepherd, going along for the ride
AD
the boy wondered what was going on.
[Verse 5]
GmDm
So he walked through this land with the creature by his side,
FmCm
to his left was a painter, painting the tides,
EbmBb
and to his right a pack of wolves did cry
AD
to the rise and fall of the moon.
GmDm
And they entered the forest and the trees they hung low,
FmCm
everything was dark and nothing there did grow
EbmBb
apart from a single yellow rose
AD
that the boy put in his hair
GmDm
And out of the forest, the snow it did fall,
FmCm
the creature held the boy away from the storm
EbmBb
as out of the snow appeared an empty platform,
AD
and they waited patiently for a train.
[Verse 6]
GmDm
From far in the distance a train did arrive
FmCm
with a thousand polar bears passengers inside,
EbmBb
the creature said to the boy "are you ready for the ride"
AD
and the boy said "yes I think I am"
GmDm
So they sped through the hills and over mountains they did go,
FmCm
over old wooden bridges withered from the cold
EbmBb
and the boy stared out of the window
AD
and smiled at all he could see
GmDm
They travelled through the desert to the setting sun,
FmCm
over streams and rivers to where it all begun,
EbmBb
and through the wind and the rain until the days were done,
AD
they rode through the land
[Verse 7]
GmDm
All of a sudden, the train it did stop,
FmCm
the creature said to the boy "this is where we both get off",
EbmBb
and all the polar bears climbed to the top of the train
AD
to wave their goodbyes
GmBb
Now alone, they walked through a featureless land,
FmCm
no blade of grass, no grain of sand
EbmBb
and on the horizon a great sea did stand
AD
and the creature said " this is where I must go"
GmDm
And at the waters edge, nothing more was said,
FmCm
the boy looked at the creature, not a single tear was shed,
EbmBb
and the creature laid his hand upon the boys head,
AD
and gave him a wink of his eye
GmDm
The creature turned around and walked slowly to the sea,
FmCm
to go to a place where forever he would be,
EbmBb
and with one great leap he leapt into sea
AD
and in the blink of an eye he was gone.
GmDm
The boy stood still, alone now on the shore,
FmCm
he stared into the distance and hoped there would be more,
EbmBb
and the yellow rose it fell to the floor
AD
and drifted away on the wind.
