Going up the neck, each time you come to your pinky, you shift your index finger down one and start over (so, 1 2 3 4 then shift, 2 3 4 5 all the way up). Going down the neck, each time you come to your index finger, you place your pinky on the fret down from where it was previously (so, 12 11 10 9, then shift, 11 10 9 8 all the way down). Be sure to keep your fingers close to the neck. I'm trying to break the habit of my pinky flying way up when my ring or middle finger go to play their notes. Also, work on alternating your picking (down up down up).
